I just replaced my '86 900s mounts last week.
I had noticed that there was some clunking between 1&2nd gear and the shifter stick appeared to have alot more fore-aft sway on acceleration.
The front motor mount "u" bracket had cracked at the flanges on both sides! The side mounts were probably originals and pretty flat with alot of vibration.
While the front is relatively easy to get at from the top with some supported floor jacking, the side mounts studs/nuts are hard to access without the car up on a lift.
It really feels much better after the replacements and no vibe. I used the "rubber" mounts, not the hydraulic- which are said to be pretty stiff riders
