I have to perform this check on my '92. I was just going to pull the left speaker grille/access panel and drive around with a volt/dwell meter attached to the cruise speed transmitter leads and see what happens. The tests others have described will work, but if you need to test the vacuum circuit, I put a vacuum (hand) pump on the line going out of the CC pump, draw the throttle all the way open with the hand pump, and make sure it holds for at least thirty seconds. One of my cruise problems was with the clutch vacuum switch leaking slowly. I fixed that, and now the only problem left is either the cruise control CU or the inductive pickup coil. The coil is a two-wire connector coming off the back of the speedometer. I recommend the use of a co-pilot when you're doing the test so you can concentrate on driving, but it should give you a fairly consistent signal. Otherwise the CU doesn't know what speed to maintain and it kicks off or just won't engage.
