I say to listen to any noises you hear from the tranney. I have two plus setup a brother with another 900s with auto's. one is 8v one is 16v and the brother is 16v Turbo.

If it shifts ok under load and doesn't hesitate you are most likely ok. Get the owner to drive it and have him floor it (from a standing start) and wait for the shift to second. If it just shifts up ok then have him go to half throttle and wait for the shift to third, it should happen pretty quickly and be about the same as the last shift. When you drive it, make sure that from a standstill when you move the left from neutral to both R and D that it doesn't lag, it should start smoothly from a standstill in either direction. Check the fluid and see if it smells burnt (somewhat like a coffee pot cooked dry...). if the color is red and doesn't smell to bad he either just changed it, or has been doing it regularly.

If you'd rather have a stick you can always start with this car and convert to a 5 speed later. See how much of a bargin you can get.

All in all the autos are ok, but a fourth gear would have been great! The milage will be worse than the 5 speed, the road noise at freeway speed with be a little more, but hey! You are talking about a CONVERTIBLE, right?
