I gotta say, I had just about given up hope and thought I was cooked. Finally I tried the method at this post:
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/900/index.html?bID=320693
It worked! Once I got enough spacers in, I could wedge the wire in between the fingers. Even then I was dubious, but when I took the spacers out, the clutch and pressure plate almost fell off in my hands.
One more time for anyone who comes across this post. Loosen all of the clutch to flywheel bolts (6 of them). You will need spacers that are at least 1/2 inch or greater to wedge between the clutch plate and the flywheel. Pry up the clutch plate and slip the spacers in. I used a heavy. long screwdriver, but I think a prybar would work better. I ended up having only three spacers in place when I worked the wire in because as you pry up at one place, another of the spacers would fall out. (It is USEFUL to have a pocket magnet - helps to not worry about your finger tips being snapped off! and can retrieve the ones that fall out.) Once the spacers were in, there was room between the clutch fingers and the plate teeth. I used #6 bare copper wire to make the spacer. I worked it in one space at a time with a screwdriver and hammer. Once it was in all the way around, I took out the spacers and sha-zaam, the clutch and pressure plate FELL off the flywheel. Unbelievable. Thank you everyone.
Now, can I tell by looking at the pressure plate whether it needs to be replaced?
