figure $2500 for new/rebuilt trans installed.
While engine/trans is out, add another $500 for headgasket.
But the problem is it never ends...once you have that pack out you'll want to have other things done...like new clutch/pressureplate (almost mandatory with new trans!!!), engine mounts, perhaps new front and rear seals, high mileage (over 200K miles) you'll want a new timing chain, and then new piston rings and connecting rod and main bearings.
I put a new auto trans in my 87 900T at 192K miles in 2001 or thereabouts (so long ago I'd have to look it up) and I've gotten my money out of it...over 280K on the car since then and way over four years so my decision tree was correctamundo. But at that time I put $4500 in a car I had paid $4500 for 60K miles previously. Got a new automatic trans and an engine reseal/rebearing/rerring. I didn't do the valves/head at the time and the car hasn't proven to need that (yet). So I can't say whether or not to do your car.
BUT...an SPG is a pretty nice car and you may want to keep it forever. You'll have to consider how much you want to put into the car total over the next four years. If you drive the car at all you'll end up with replacing front seat covers/leather, dashboard, headliner, a new stereo here and there, a couple CV joints and wheel bearings, maybe a new radiator, and that doesn't count new toys like bigger injectors (yumm!), a rising rate fuel pressure regulator, maybe an AID, or a stainless exhaust or even a different turbocharger.
You might even want to sell your SPG now while it's running and get a newer SPG with a good transmission and engine.
