There are a pair of plastic bushings inside the linkage that are beginning to bind. Either get a good linkage out of a junkyard or pull the motor/linkage assembly out yourself and rebuild. At the base of the pivoting pins (the part that your wiper arms bolt to) there is a plastic washer that sometimes wears out. Eventually your wipers will stall on your way home in the rain.
Pull off the wiper arms, remove the bloody AC compressor and bracket if it's still in there, remove the linkage assembly and fish it out of the car. To get at the driver's side pivot, you have to undo the locking nut from the metal cable that spins the eccentric pulley, and it takes some guessing to get the tension right when you put it back together again. If it's too loose it will walk itself off, and if it's too tight, well, you won't get it too tight.
Do not hammer the pulley against the spindle. If you loosen that up (they are press-fit together) the spindle will work its way loose in another twelve months, on your way home in the rain.
A unit replacement from a junkyard will be much easier, otherwise disconnect the motor and rebuild as described above. Sometimes opening it up and greasing the pivots is enough- remove the circlip that holds the pivot spindles in and lube around the base of the spindles where they work against the cast linkage assembly. If the plastic washers are dead, fashion some new ones from a milk jug or other suitable plastic.
