I recently upgraded my cyl head from 86 to 92. It works just marvy and I'm happy about the swap. While prepping for install I checked the lifters and noticed that some had full "spring action" while some did not. I assumed those without any spring were kaput. I also noticed on the 86 head (with less than 100K miles) that those lifters were mostly springless as well. That head was quiet and otherwise worked fine and wasn't the reason for the swap. I decided to use the 92 lifters the head came with, and replace them with whatever good used ones I could find in local parts yards. To my surprise, when the refurbished 92 head was first started there was some expected noise, but it eventually went away after a standard warm-up cycle. So my puzzle is: what exactly is bad about these lifters without the internal spring action? How would one even know they are bad if they are quiet and the engine runs fine? Is the timing or performance somehow effected without the lifter internal spring action?
