Thanks Hair,,,
I just pulled it apart. Inboard pad showed very little wear, outboard pad was gone down to the metal.
But when I had somebody on the brake, removing one pad out at a time (with a woodblock stuck in where the missing pad would go in, neither piston seemed at all hung up: they both exteneded and retracted apparently normally. Again no signs of hydraulic fluid leakage at the caliper or loss from the master cylinder reservoir, although inboard piston boot was cracked and funky. NAPA is now turning the rotor ($18), I'll put the thing back together tomorrow with new pads, and after a month or so, I'll recheck for equal wear inboard and outboard. I so, I guess I just put in a rebuilt caliper ($45 w/exchange from auto zone.) I just don't want to mess with the hydraulics right this moment as we need to catch a flight Wednes AM.
When I showed NAPA the unequally worn pads and said there was no sign of piston seize or hydraulic failure, they said "check for corrosion on the guide pins". But as far as I can tell the rear calipers at least don't float on guide pins and they seem to be bolted hard up to the axle housing. That suggests that pressure is equalized to both pistons through a hydraulic port, ehhh?
Thanks much. This is a great BB!
