If I'm not mistaken, the '85 and '86 SPG did have a sport suspension with sway bars and was lower than the 900T by about a half inch. The SPG suspension was upgraded in '87 with a road handling kit and performance upgrades which increased HP.
When I first saw a photo of the SPG prototype in 1985 in the L.A. Times, I was driving a '72 99 EMS and decided that the SPG would be my next car and bought one the following year. Admittedly, it was largely an aesthetic decision based on the way it looked in the photo but also from the press description. When I test drove what would become my ride for the next twenty years I was more than convinced - it was like my EMS had taken steroids. When I first saw the SPG first hand, it looked like it was moving fast while sitting still - a result, I think, of the design of the ground effects.
I still think the SPG is a hot looking car and especially like the way the old style bumpers and blunt nose on the '86 work with the farings... and, I like the wheels. While my SPG has essentially the same power as a 900T from the same year, it's perfect for my needs and still gives me a thrill when I kick it while entering the freeway. I like the way it looks and drives.
