I think you're right about that. I measured the distance between wheel and top of fender as per the diagram in Bentley - it's about 9 1/2" on my car. It would be about 9" with sport chassis.
I have to say that I've been living with an illusion for twenty years - when I bought my SPG in '86, the salesman told me it was 1/2" lower than a standard chasis. I got the car in August, maybe he was using '87 specs to make the sale. Anyway, you're right - the suspension change was in '87.
