How well charged is the battery? Will it crank the car?
Without knowing anything else about the condition of the car (other than the wiring has been messed with), it's possible that the battery isn't being charged by the alternator. There are 2 usual causes - bad ground wire from the alternator case to the engine and alternator brushes worn down below their service limit. Either one of those will let the battery slowly discharge until the car just dies and you get the odd lights you describe.
