So my car sat all winter waiting for me to do the brakes and suspension. When I got back on the road I was very pleased to find that my mystery high idle had completely vanished. The car idled perfect. Last summer I had capped of the small line running from the intake to the valve cover and got it to idle at 900-1000 rpm but that was as low as it would go. I figured I'd end up rebuilding the throttle body because I had checked every other source of air and they were all tight but I still had a slightly high idle that I could not get rid of.
So its been great lately, but today after running the tank very low I filled up with Shell v-power premium. After driving for ten minutes on the interstate, I got off at the exit and when I came to a stop my idle was up at 1500. Every once in a while I could get it to go down to 1100 but then it would slowly climb back up. Ah-ha! I said to myself, maybe there is something in the gas that is fooling the o2 sensor or something about the gas that just makes the car idle higher. It seemed that the AIC was opening up to let more air in. This was my second fill up since getting back on the road and the first with this gas.
As I was pulling into my driveway, I noticed the real culprit. My vacuum/boot guage wasn't working. I hadn't noticed it before. I left the engine running and popped the hood and found that the line going to that gague had popped off at the Tee. I slipped it back on but the end broke off in my hand. I cut some off with my trusty pocket knife and tried again. It broke again. I was able to snap that line in half with my fingers anywhere along its length I wanted to.
I've got it working for now and the idle's back where it should be but I need to get in there and change out that line. I thought I had replaced that line but I guess I didn't. It wasn't that bad 6 months ago.
Or was it? Hmmmmmm.
