Do the standard checks - fuel, air, spark... You can jumper the fuel pump relay and run the pump to make sure it's doing its thing, or try and crank it for a short while. You can loosen the input side of the fuel rail slightly and see if fuel sprays out. Yeah, I know, not scientific, but it'll tell you if there's fuel pressure in the rail. (Wear eye protection, or put a cloth over the fitting :) Pull a plug, see if it's wet with fuel. Crank some more, keeping the loosened spark plug/wire AWAY from the spark plug hole. You should get some gas going on there. Lay the plug threads, with wire attached, across the radiator crossmember or the forward engine lifting lug and crank some more, you should have spark.
This should get you going in the right direction. As others suggested, that clicking sound coil have been the coil failing, or some part of the ignition system improperly connected. I'd start there; bring a spare coil. :)
