$3000 seems like a lot to spend on an old Saab like this, but I don't think it would take $3k if you've got time, skill, and space. Just go buy yourself a running but beat up newer 900 and swap everything over. There is nothing truly complex about such a swap and when you're done you won't have to worry about annoying old stuff.
The things you want to look for to keep your life simple are:
1. Find a car with solid ("barrel style") motor mounts and not the hydraulic type. This will allow you to drop the drivetrain right into the 5-door.
2. Find a car with good wiring - this generally means avoiding MY1985 cars.
3. Find a car from '87 or earlier, so you can steal its wheels and lose the TRX nonsense.
You can surely find such a donor car for less than a grand (just buy someone's old rustbucket), and you'll probably want to spend ~$300 in parts and stuff (gaskets, seals, fluids, etc.) to build it up right, but when you're done you'll have a 5-door with a much improved drivetrain.
Have fun!
