First of all, cure your overheating problem.
Regardless of age or mileage, remove the connector for the cooling fan delay relay, located on the left front inner fender seam ahead of the fuse/relay box(es). Clean all the junk out of those connectors. When it loses connection, sometimes the fan won't work right (it won't stay on when you switch off the ignition.)
Next, If your radiator leaks (green stains that don't indicate freshness), replace it.
Finally, replace the cooling fan thermoswitch with the 82 degree variety. This kept overheating on my '88 in check until I could replace the radiator.
After all that is done, either recharge the AC or disconnect it and bypass the pressure switch. First, disconnect the red wire going to the compressor so it cannot turn on (no refrigerant in the system, so you don't want it to). Next, only after you have disconnected the compressor, remove both of the blue wires from the over/underpressure switch on the reciever-drier, located behind the washer fluid reservoir. Connect those two together, and your AC button is now the starboard-side cooling fan button.
