Hesitation/stumbling/dies. Help!

My 97 900-T's problems have become worse over time. First it was the slightest hiccup while driving. Then it wgot worse, bucking and stumbling when going up hills on the highway. Now, the same thing but while local driving, and even when the car's at idle. When it stumbles, the tach drops to zero. Yesterday it died at idle before I even got moving, after the rpm dropped way low then went way up, then died.
There's some idle fluctuation, but it's maybe 200 rpm. The problem doesn't seem to happen only when cold; usually when warm. Doesn't matter whether I have a full tank or a quarter tank of gas.
The car's had a tune-up - cap, rotor, plugs and wires.
The wiring connector for the hall sensor on the distributor looks worn out - the previous owner had a wire-tie holding it together. I can pull out the wires a bit and see them going into the distributor. I'm not able to duplicate the problem when I have the car running in the driveway while I wiggle those wires around though.
Also it seems my gas mileage is lower than it used to be.
There's also a wheezy kind of sound sometimes when I accelerate, but this is a pretty new problem and the stumbling's been going on much longer than that.
Any ideas? Fuel pump / distributor? Other?
