It isn't that easy to replace for a DIY person but it sure gets easier if you are planning to remove the exhaust manifold for another repair.
To remove the old freeze plug I just hit it on one end so that it tilts and then I pull it out with a plier. Clean the surface real good and knock the new one in.
It is extremely important that you knock the new freeze plug in straight and not too far in.
Most shops have a special tool with adapters that fit the freeze plug, and with that tool it is a breeze to replace freeze plugs even with the exhaust manifold in place.
Takes about 1 hour to replace the two engine freeze plugs on an 85 and up Saab 900.
