I've done both ways. It is easier to pull the entire engine. Main reason I replaced a tranny from below was because of location, and I don't like paying other people to do the work on my car. I live way out in canyon country, and I didn't have a flat working surface on which to manuever the engine hoist once lifted. Yes, I could have rented a garage space some 20 miles from where I live, and then rent a car to travel to that garage every day. Would have cost me hundreds of dollars more. Because much of my daily work is done at my home office, it made more sense to stay there and do the tranny job so I could also get regular work done. That aside, the below method is doable if you have the proper tools and can work uncomfortably beneath the car and not lose your mind or blow out your back. I used a trolly jack to do the lowering and lifting, and used a construct of bricks and wood pieces to stabilize it during the lift/lower. Always keep a piece of plywood between the tranny bottom and the jack point. Keeps it from slipping. Because of the care I took to keep the weight centered on the jack and used all the wood and bricks to build the bracing, I didn't experince the tranny rolling off the jack and crushing my arm or smashing my face. That's the stuff you have to be concerned about. If I had no choice but to do it again from below, I would do it, knowing exactly what to do. But my preference would be removing the whole engine.
