Hi everyone,
I have an 88 16v turbo, looking for any suggestions. I'm a novice, and may need to bring it in, but would like see what sounds likely...any tests or things to try?
Often, when starting from a stop, especially AFTER the car has warmed up or is in traffic, there is almost no power at all for a few seconds--then it does kick in, but like a non-Turbo. When it does kick in, it often doesn't boost into the yellow at all, though sometimes it comes up to a third on the yellow. Still, this doesn't really sound like a boost problem, necessarily: when it happens, there is almost NO power at all, rather than simply no Turbo. I can at least get out of the way, with basic acceleration, after 3-5 seconds. Sometimes it does this when attempting to accelerate in higher gears, too, as if the car's being held back by something. I was thinking fuel pump, or supply pump, since the only time it seems NOT to do this is when the tank is almost completely full. But that could also be a fluke. Any chance this could be the overboost shutoff switch? I looked at it, and the hose was connected and the connectors seemed clean...
Also, and maybe related, is the temp gauge. I have a new 82 t-stat and a new 82 fan t-switch, along with new headgasket and new-ish radiator. The fans cycle on and off normally while idling, and the car doesn't seem to be running hot under the hood. Still, the temp gauge comes up quickly to just below the red, cycling up and down a quarter or so but never running below half. I tried grounding the connector, and the gauge jumped all over the place. Is the gauge bad? If it is, could it be causing it just to read high like that? Even on the highway it reads just over a half.
The power problem seems like more of an issue--I don't want it to die suddenly, like it did a few months back when the fuel pump relay died.
Many thanks!
