PhilB, You have either a starter system, or battery problem. Test the starter circuit by looking for 12 volts on the small yellow wire on the starter motor when the key is turned to the start position. If no 12 volts, then you have a wiring, wire connection or ignition switch defect and it sounds as if it may be intermittant. If the starter control circuit is good then look for a loose connection of the high amperage circuit to the starter from the battery. Check for weak connections of the battery ground circuit too.
If not a starter problem then you probably have a weak battery which is "chemically recharging" when under no load.
While your symptoms are inconsistant with a charging system problem you should also have a look at the charging circuit connections, especially the alternator ground wire. Be sure that the alternator belt is properly tightened and the alternator mounting bushings aren't shot. Good luck.
