I got a Bosch filter/strainer at the local parts store for $5.00. It fits on the bottom of the prepump, replacing the stock strainer assembly.
BUT, the prepump will just hang on the bottom of the cannister, because it's not supported by the part of the stock strainer that screws to the cannister. So, I cut off the support piece and modified it to fit around the new strainer.
So, to answer my own question: The Scantech-type prepump strainer replaces the stock strainer assembly, but you're probably going to want to make some modifications so you can reuse the bottom-support-part of the stock strainer assembly, because the Scantech-type is totally lacking a way to attach the prepump to the cannister.
