With a 900, it's pretty hard to put it in wrong. Basically, you can either put it in right side up or upside down. I've never tried it, but I'm pretty sure that if you put it in upside down, the thermostat housing(the domed piece on the end of the hose) wouldn't fit. This would be noticeable because it would leak badly. But if, for some reason, it was put in upside down, it would open at the wrong temperature - hotter. That's not good.
Something to know with a 900 - whenever the cooling system has been opened - e.g. the thermostat replaced - it must be bled. There is a little bleed nipple right by the thermostat housing just for that purpose. As a note - removing the cap from the reservoir doesn't count as opening the system. And if the bleed nipple was left loose, the system wouldn't hold pressure and would spew coolant.
