They can be made to fit, but frequently aftermarket units are fiddly. The Bosch unit is not expenssive.
Originally I was against rebuilding the regulator brushes, but my family members and friends have been doing it for some time now, and their cars are going super strong.
Also, like Brownie stated, you must make sure the ground wire on your car to the alternator is good. This is a frequent failure point peculiar to Saabs of the era. It is also cheap as dirt to fix.
