FWIW, Saab is very specific about replacing ECUs with only the exact same part - I'm sure this has more to do with emissions and Saab's liability in the matter than actual performance/capability. By virtue of the fact that all LH 2.4 turbo cars use the exact same air mass meter, idle control valve, injectors, and throttle position sensor - the components of the fuel injection system itself - I think anyone would be hard-pressed to quantify why one ECU would work and others would not. It's not like the ECU knows what model year car it's installed in. ;)
Now, swapping ECUs between models (like turbo vs. non, and 9000 vs. 900) - that could cause problems. Different AMM/ECU calibrations, and different math done calculating the length/timing of the intake tract could cause issues when swapping these parts. Whether Saab actually did all this work between cars I dunno - but most larger manufacturers do.
Summary: As long as you have an ECU from the same fuel injection version and engine type (2.4 vs. 2.4.2, and B202T vs. B2O2I, for example), you'll be fine.
