After the car died, I had it towed home and did a little troubleshooting of my own. Bypassing the fuel pump relay at the fuse box verified that the pump run. So I knew it wasn't a bad fuel pump. Since the pump begins to run during cranking and I could not hear it from inside the car, I kept running continuously and then attempted to start the car. It didn't work. I checked all the grounds, the hall sensor, and the TPS. No change. At this point I run out of ideas and had the car towed to the nearest saab guru 50 miles away. When he called me he said that he put a 9000 ECU on it and started immediately. He has 30 years experience on these cars and I value his opinion. I'm assuming that his assesment is honest. He said that it had to be that exact part number with no interchangeability. According to him, '89 is notorious for ECU problems and they are hard to find. He found one for $450.00 (ouch!).
Also, I have been reading this site for a few years now and have learned alot about this car from you guys. All the imput is greatly appreciated and if there is concensus that the car will run well and not be damaged by putting in another ECU, I'm willing to give it a shot. If we can come up with a year and part number I can certainly find one since the places I've checked have everyother one except the '89.
