I believe prepump failure would be indicated by running out of gas at a half tank. If josh runs the car until the low fuel light goes on without any problems, and when he fills the tank only gets 12 gallons in thats well over a half tanks worth of gas, is it not? The question is more about when the light is calibrated to come on, at least thats the way I understand it. Working as a captain , I always discount 10 - 15 percent of fuel tank capacity as being unuseable. I would apply this logic to the fuel tank in my car as well.
