After spending a few months using a portable, rechargeable jump-start kit, I finally had a chance to try out the suggestions on the Townsend Imports site:
http://townsendimports.com/Web/electrical_system_folder/modstartcircuit.htm
I checked out all of the basics (battery ground, etc), then was able to successfully start the car when it was in the failure mode by touching a wire connected to the battery directly to the terminal for the yellow wire on the starter.
As recommended, I added a Ford solenoid to the circuit, and the car now consistently starts--even in the midst of a hot Alabama summer.
Next on the list is the AC, in case I ever have to drive with the top up... :-)
Thanks for the help!
John
