I got a typical old C900 AC system - the output has been gradually diminishing for the last few years, and I found a obvious leak spot - oil all around where on the the hoses is fastened. New O-ring time.
Only thing is, this is an R-12 car, and to fix an O-ring I have to drain the system, and which means I will have to have pay someone to drain the system, then after I fix the leak either pay and arm and a leg to get it refilled with R-12, take my chances with an R-134 conversion, or take my chances with one of the somewhat dubious R-12 substitutes.
As it happens I have 2 cans of R-12 in my hoard, but that's not enough to do the job.
Poking about the net, I found a guy who has been recycling his own R-12 by hooking up a tank which is inside a freezer to the high pressure post, then bleeding off the car while the engine is running. The cold tank condenses the vapor as it enters the tank, so he is able to fit a lot more than you'd think just looking at the pressures involved.
I am toying with a simplified method by hooking an empty standard 12oz can to the manifold, immersing it in a bucket of ice water, then opening the HP side needle valve to allow it to (slowly) fill. Then when I want to refill the system, I just immerse the can in hot water and fill through the LP port as usual.
The can would be vacuumed before being filled.
I can see a few possible pitfalls, so I thought I'd see if anyone else has tried this. One possibility is that the can won't handle the pressures involved or be too small.
