I usually jack from where the control arm (or whatever its called in the back) attaches to the body.
I have no problem putting a jack stand under the rear axle behind where the control arm mounts.
My control arm (that's what I'm calling it) has the spring perch and the shock mount).
In the front - I use the AL crossmember all the time.
On an old 87 w/ the road handling kit - I have to lift up on the bumper (or get someone to push it up and down) so I'd get the clearance to put the jack under. I'd use the lower control mounts to put the jack stands on.
