What I did was to remove those slotted captive nuts that hold the plate covering the electrical ignition switch. I filed them down so they would freely turn in the hole in that plate. Then I secured the long bolts that come from the bottom with hex nuts (5mm I believe.) That way the top plate is then secured by those slotted nuts. The ignition switch is now accessible without having to twist the shifter housing and cause further damage. Simply unscrew the nuts and the plate comes off.
