Having said that, it may still be the linkage. Maybe they did something wrong on installing the trans 10k ago. The linkage has some different stages, which you can imagine if you start thinking about it. The first one is under the stick, there was a fine post about a short shifter a couple days back that gave good insight. Then there's a rod that goes through the firewall and a piece of rubber there that can be inserted wrong. The rod couples to the gearbox shifter mechanism with another coupling.
To get to it all you have to take out most of the center pieces under the dash and between the seats. You might do yourself a favor and buy a Bentley manual. It's good reading, has great pictures and really helps to work things out.
