'87 900T, original oil-cooled turbo, 185K miles, never had a problem w/ the turbo. And that 15-30 sec wait for shutdown is if you have been running high rpm/boost and come to a sudden stop. With normal driving (you're on a residential street, and pull into your driveway), that isn't usually a problem. The turbo, whether oil or water-cooled, should last a very long time. Just change your oil every 3k mi (the manual says 3750 miles).
