There's two piston surfaces that slide - the outer which is the one you screw in, and it's opposite piston on the back (or inside) of the caliper unit. Like the outer piston, that one can lock up as well from a build-up of rust and gunk behind the seal. Also, because the inner piston contains the e-brake mechanism, that devise is known to lock up as well, causing the brake to drag. It has to do with the grease pack inside becoming contaminated or just drying up. I've successfully rebuilt all my calipers, so it is possible to refurbish them. To do that you take them apart, clean everything up, repack with caliper grease, reassemble, adjust e-brake, bleed and drive. Or just replace to be sure.
