A reason to just whack the retainers with a socket and hammer for disassembly is, it's ridiculously fast and easy, keepers flying everywhere and all popped loose in just a minute. Obviously, you need the tube-with-a-window-in-it rig and a way to compress the spring for reassembly.
The question was, how to remove valves to port the head.
As wild-cowboy a solution as whacking a socket on the valve retainer sounds, it has speed, simplicity and low frustration level as reasons to do it. Just do it in a controlled area, clean floor and good light, and pick up all the loose pieces as you make them.
And it's so much fun, everybody needs to try it.
