Large hose clamps work for the outer CV joint. I used one for almost a year and a half on my '89.
But I agree with vsfoxe ... I prefer the real boot clamps, too. The downside is that I have only been able to get them with replacement CV boots. The upside is that, once you figure out the trick of dealing with the circlip, replacing the boots and repacking the joint with fresh moly grease only takes half an hour per side and the boot is fresh.
