AC rejuvenation on my 1992 900S . . . Posted by Walt [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: A/C Retrofit Oil - Anyone heard of this?, Justin VanAbrahams ![]() |
When I removed lines from Seiko-Seiki compressor, saw red and black crud on inlet. This supposedly is oxidized aluminum from internal condensor corrosion from broken down R134a, ester oil, and moisture. Dealer had converted from R12 to 134a. Took compressor apart, and cleaned all crud out from inside. Cleaned vanes on internal pump and reed valves. Lubed pump as reassembled. Cleaned out lots of gunk from inside compressor shell. Used Hyalomar on gable plate of compressor. Cleaned oily gunk off clutch and reset spacing with washers to 0.030-inches. Added 134a fittings and an ES12a conversion label to be legal. Flushed out condenser and evaporator with citrus oil based FJC-2402 flush. Cleaned out fresh air vent box drain while evaporator was removed. Got lots of black stuff from condensor and evaporator (after removing expansion valve). Not so much black stuff from hard and soft hoses. Blew flush out system with plenty of compressed air. Changed O-rings using the $20 Saab O-ring kit. Installed new receiver/drier. Added 5 fl.oz of SUS-500 mineral oil to compressor, 1.5 fl.oz oil to evaporator, 1 fl.oz oil to new receiver/drier per Bentley. Attached vacuum pump and sucked moisture from system for 20 minutes. Vapor from pump outlet was visible for first minute. Turned off pump, closed valve to pump and verified system held vacuum. Added 1 can of ES12a (flammable! propane/isobutane 50/50 blend) as a liquid with system OFF. This brought rest pressure to 65psig per http://www(dot)autorefrigerants(dot)com at 80degF which is enough but not over-charged. Turned system on and got 45degF air at center dash vent. Sight glass on receiver/drier showed bubbles streaming by a clear glass, so must have removed most of black crud. Clearing sight glass overcharges system with ES12a per ES12a vendor. No pine odor from ES12a anywhere in engine or passenger areas, so no leaks. Very little change in engine speed when compressor clutch engages. If I had to do over, I would replace condensor with a larger one, since doesn't get freezing cold until car is on freeway. With AC on, engine temperature not yet exceeded 1/2-way on dash gauge with 82degF thermostat and fan switch even in 95degF weather. Not bad results for a 14 year old Saab, since materials and parts were only about $200.
