My experience has been that a new A/C clutch is almost as expensive as the rebuilt clutch and compressor.
For instance, the a/c compressor and clutch for a 99 jeep cherokee lists for $287 (rebuilt) or $350-$450 new (range depending on manufacturer).
The clutch is $224. Also, you need some special tools to remove the clutch (puller and snap ring pliers). I have the other a/c tools, guages and vacuum pump.
Having never pulled a clutch, I've found it easier to just replace the compressor.
It may be easy to do, but the high cost of the cluth has always led me the other way. If it was <$50, I might try.
good luck
