a couple of possibilities.

sounds like the reverse lockout for the collar is out of adjustment, or possibly the plastic ball is broken. there is a great recent write-up on how to setup for a short shifter. do a search and read it, pay attention to the adjustments portion, hopefully that will fix the lockout portion.

you should not be able to remove the key when in reverse, however with the above issue... maybe the interlock doesn't know you are in reverse? I'd get the lockout fixed then see if key removal issue goes away. if it doesn't it may be necessary to replace the keyswitch mechanism. wife's car has 387k on it and we had to do her's about 100k miles ago. finally wore it out. hope your's gets fixed with the lockout.
