Electronic Control Unit-Fuel Pump problem

I have a question for Saab diagnosticians. Thanks in advance for any help.
I own a 1989 Saab S with 125K. Last week, it would not start. I thought it was flooded. The “shift up” light was on which was very odd because that had never happened before when starting the car. (That light works as intended.) I turned the car off but the fuel pump would not stop and gas poured out the bottom of the engine until I could disconnect the battery. A similar event happened 2½ years ago while driving. At that time, the car quit and gas poured out. The local Saab mechanic said the electronic control unit failed. He determined this after trying to reset all the codes and putting in an ECU he knew was working properly. Within one year, the check engine light kept coming on; once again the Saab mechanic said the ECU had failed, but it was replaced under warranty.
I have either been buying lemon ECUs or I have some electrical problem and causes a problem with the ECU.
