5th gear whine Posted by Todd [Email] (#958) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Todd) on Thu, 3 Aug 2006 06:40:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a 1991 saab 900 with 163000 miles on it. Just got it. It had a new clutch in 9-05 but I believe it is the original transmission (5-speed). I have a high pitched whine through all the gears which after reading all of the wisdom on this site, I suspect is a pinion bearing. In 5th gear though... I get a much louder, lower "musical note" sound (like blowing air over an empty bottle) that is constant on acceleration but not present when off the gas. There are times when I think I may hear it in 4th but it is very obvious as soon as you get in 5th over about 2000 rpms. The mechanism that prevents shifting into reverse is broken (can go into reverse without pulling up on the lever) but there is no difficulty getting into any of the gears. Thoughts on what is going on are much appreciated as well as recommendations on rebuilding the tranny verses driving it till it breaks. Thanks!
