Just a coincidence I'm headed out to work on the cooling system on my '88 tomorrow because of the parts choices I made a few years ago.
Water pump: stick with OEM. My eastern-European knockoff lasted eight months instead of eight years. That doesn't justify saving $40 to me.
Heater valve: stick with OEM. The non-brand one has started leaking right on schedule, and it's gotten worse with the warm weather. Lucky me it didn't catastrophically fail during the past two months when it's been leaking. During the heater season, I noticed pretty terrible fine control of the heater as well. Savings here was $60 but now I have to take it all apart and fix it again. Others' experienced failures in 8-12 months, I guess I'm lucky now that I got two years out of it!
Ball joints: don't skimp on suspension or braking components.
Harmonic balancer: do it with the engine out!
Oil pump cover seal: these last around 200k per motor. Do it with the engine out! I didn't and have started to regret it.
Front upper suspension bushings: do them with the engine out! Especially on the driver's side, right? (my cars are non-turbo giving a little more room to play on the starboard side of things.)
