running rich, idle hunting, stalling after warm up

1987 8V base. i already searched for vacuum leaks and have found none.
symptoms: she is fine to start up, hesitates when engaging unless there is a little extra throttle, once warm after a minute or two she begins to hunt at idle and wants to stall at stop lights. runs perfect on the highway and under throttle but the fuel economy is noticable diminished. i think she is running rich. a bit of a gas smell from the exhaust.
so... her exhaust connection at the motor (top of down pipe) came very loose at about the same time as the idle issues began. she is very loud now and i see that the O2 sensor is right there. could this exhaust leak be affecting the O2 sensor performance and therefore causing the problems at idle and seemingly running rich? or am i looking at another issue? (again, i have pretty much ruled out a vacuum leak)
