I'd say you on on the correct track. somewhere in the back of my memory... is something about the system not using the o2 sensor until warmed up, and then paying attention to it. this is one of the reasons new cars are supposed to warm up faster, and also why you are supposed to start your car and ease on down the road in the morning - it warms up faster and then uses the actual readings instead of a baseline guess.
fix your leaks, of any type, and see how it runs then. if you need any stuff for an 8V CIS send me an email. I am in the process of pulling my last 1987 8v apart, stealing the 5 speed from it. Ran good, but I'm moving to 16v exclusively now.
