1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I was once told(investment advice) to never buy anything that you like. I have a 91 900 turbo convertable. I love the car, it's in nice shape, stored every winter, no rust. I bought it for $600 and it didn't run. A half hour later put in a different fuel pump ran like a champ, and drove it heck out of it. One hot day, the fan didn't come on and the engine overheated, tick tick tick, and gold dust in the oil sump, the engine was shot. I found a free 90 turbo engine on this site near home, and put it in the car along with a rebuilt tranny from my totaled college 900. It ran great, but I was too cheap to change the coolant hoses :( I had that hose between the gooseneck/thermostat housing and high temp cutout sensor develop a leak. It dumped the coolant in the head. There was no indication of the engine overheating on the temp gauge. The car started losing power and started ticking(lifters I hope?)I pulled over and let it cool. I had 2 jugs of water in the trunk, and impatiently poured it into the expansion tank. It flashed to steam instantly. The oil looked clean and unburned, and I turned it over. It spun over easily, like it didn't have any compression. I haven't put a gauge on it yet, but I know it didn't have compression. I picked up another used engine, but don't want to do all the work again. What are the chances that the head gasket is blown/and or the head is cracked? It would be easy to put the head of this other engine with a new head gasket on. It was an original head gasket, and I don't know if it is common for these to blow? Wouldn't I have some compression even if the head gasket was blown? There was no coolant in the oil, and no oil in the coolant. maybe the valves are hung open? Does the head gasket usually go if the head overheats?
any advice would be appreciated,
thanks in advance
