New cap, rotor, and plugs. How are the wires? Are they the right plugs (Saabs like NGKs), and are they gapped properly? NEVER assume the proper gap out of the box.
Big question - where is the timing set? Running too advanced causes hard starting.
Make sure the advance is working properly. If it's stuck too advanced, well, see the previous sentance.
New fuel pump. How's the fuel filter? If the fuel pump is trying to push fuel through a clogged filter, you won't get much flow. It's tricky, but it would be good to check the voltage at the fuel pump while the pump is connected. The voltage should be within about 1/2 volt of the battery voltage. Pitted/worn contacts on the fuel pump relay could cause a voltage drop, so the fuel pump isn't getting full voltage, and isn't producing good pressure/flow.
Another hard thing to check - check valve on the fuel pump. If it's bad, it is hard to keep and maintain fuel pressure.
Check the coolant temperature sensor. If the car is hard to start when cold, but easy when warm, it is possible the sensor is bad. The ECU thinks it is a warm engine when it's actually cold, and doesn't provide enough fuel (cold engines take more fuel).
Simple one - turn the key to ON for 5 seconds before starting the car. Don't we all, while we check to make sure all the lights come on properly? (OK, we don't). The fuel pump will run for a bit, building up pressure, before starting. You get better fuel pressure, so you get a better fuel spray pattern.
How's the battery/ cables? Does the engine crank slow? If the compression is a bit poor, with slow cranking it can be hard to build up enough compression to start well. Maybe the battery is tired.
Make sure you start with your foot off the gas.
If your friend is cranking the engine for 40 straight revolutions, he is doing the engine no favor. If it doesn't catch in about 5 seconds, turn the car off, give it a few seconds, and then try again.
If the problem persists, have the fuel FLOW and Pressure checked.
That's just a few ideas.
