The usually problem is that the 3 screws that hold the gear cover onto the unit loosen and the main gear doesn't make proper contact with the worm gear on the motor shaft.
You'll see 2 10-mm bolt heads on the rear flange, to the right of the center. Remove those bolts and you can swing the motor/gearbox towards the front.
You'll see immediately if that's the problem. You'll probably find at least two of the hexscrews somewhere in the spare tire compartment if the cover has fallen off. Be warned that these are among the few non-metric things in the car - good old Lucas. I think that the other non-metric items are the carriage bolts that hold the shifter assembly to the floorpan.
