5 Speed or Auto ? New auto can cost +/- $3,000
Best idea - find the local import/Saab mech and make friends
$1000 is pretty decent for that car - consider tho that once you start driving it more than 1x every 3 weeks it will probably need brakes, ball joints.... exhaust... probably an all around tune up, plus, fuel filter, wires, etc.
So expect to put another $1200 into it in the next 90 days - and then you'll have a reliable transporter through April.
Check the heat shield, motor mounts, grounding points especially the one near the battery for rust... Check for excessive oil leaking under the exhaust manifold, If 5 speed check the clutch hydraulic line for softness, rust, seepage on the drivers side. Check for rust everywhere!
My first Saab was an 87 900S - You can fit tons of stuff in that hatch!
If there's no rust I'd buy it - If it's an automatic I'd want to be sre it's working well - My 93 is an auto and it wont go into reverse until it's warm.
I wouldn't have bought any Saabs if it weren't for the advice on this board!
Good Luck
