Two comments on the procedure:
- I don't use the special tool that the page mentions. I just pull the shift rod coming from the transmission all the way back and make sure that it clicks in to locate third gear.
A fellow named Chadwick gave us a great procedure for loosening the pinch bolt on the coupler: take the driver's side tire off, get about 2-1/2 or 3 feet of extensions, and go in through the porthole that the steering rack tie rod goes through. It's way easier than any other way I've tried.

And, double-check to see that the 3 torx screws that hold the shift lever into the shifter assembly aren't loose - that causes odd shifting, too.
