I'd never use split boots.
The ones from any of the sponsers usually come with grease.
It's a little more of a PITA, but you should repack the inners as well.
I think about $50 will get you both inners/both outers/grease too.
You should take a look at the ball joints, tie rod ends and brakes before you order. If anything is split - replace it.
If you are keeping the car and don't kow when that stuff has been changed - you may want to save yourself some time and $ in the long run.

I don't think there is any way to properly remove the grease while on a ramp. You just can't see anything. I take mine completely apart (ball bearings out and everyghing) wipe all the grease off and put in new stuff.
All you need is a GOOD set of snap ring pliers. Graftsman makes a good set for not too much - that'll help a lot.
Split boots are really a temp fix and nothing you'll get any real mileage out of.
