I just bought a 91 saab 900 turbo for 500 bucks and it was totally worth it. Of course, it has a few problems, but I expected that. I just replaced all the wiring in the dash for the sound system, but when I bought it, I was told that the speedometer was simply not hooked up. So, I tore off the rest of the dash and went crazy trying to get the instrument panel out. I finally did and found that I might be a little over my head with this project. There should be 4 connections if I am seeing everything right...one big one on each side and then a small flat one in the middle and then the round part that is white (which I am guessing is what needs to be reattached). I am having the worst luck trying to get all of those parts to reattach so I can move on and reinstall the dash panels, so I need some help. What do I need to do to get that circular (white) cable reattached to the back of the speedometer? Do I need to take off the whole dash board or should I just bring it somewhere and have them reattach it. I am sure it needs to be done because I sort of need to know speed and distance, so any help, or any direction where I could get some help (books, magazine, people, website, etc...) that could help me put this whole thing back together would be great.
Also, I was told that when I got it, there is a screw missing that links the shifter to the ignition plate (might not be the right term, but it is a metal piece with a whole in the center and three screws attach it to a ring, which slips over the shifter ball at the bottom...) I looked and found out that that ring that attaches to it is broken on one of the three flanges that connects it to the metal part. I cannot get the car to shift into reverse (and it is hard to get it into 5th) although I know it has both gears just fine because the guy I bought it from could jimmy it into both gears. What my question is here is if replacing that ring, which is broken, should fix the problem I am having of not being able to get it into 5th or Reverse. The screw that is missing (which is the one where the broken flange is) is the one that is closest to the driver seat if that helps any....
I am no mechanic, but I have a lot of know-how and can fix almost anything to a reasonable degree. If anyone could help me or point me in the direction of help, that would be awesome...thanks so much...
